Stadium Overview

Vicarage Road is a compact, traditional football ground close to Watford town centre and Watford General Hospital. It has been Watford's home since 1922 and has been rebuilt and modernised over time rather than replaced. The ground is made up of four separate stands: the Graham Taylor Stand, the Sir Elton John Stand, the Rookery Stand and the Vicarage Road Stand.

The Graham Taylor Stand is the two-tier side stand and one of the most recognisable parts of the ground. The Sir Elton John Stand runs opposite and is the newest major stand, named after the club's former chairman and most famous supporter. The Rookery is the main home end and usually the strongest Watford atmosphere area. Away fans are normally housed in the Vicarage Road Stand at the opposite end. The ground is tight, easy to navigate and close to the pitch, giving it a very different feel from larger out-of-town stadiums.

Away End

Away supporters are normally located in the Vicarage Road Stand, usually on the eastern side of the stand nearest the Sir Elton John Stand. The visiting section is at one end of the ground and is separated from home supporters, with a typical away allocation around the low two-thousands depending on fixture demand and safety requirements.

The view from the away section is generally good because the stand is cantilevered and does not have supporting pillars blocking the pitch. Concourses are functional rather than especially spacious, and the stand can feel busy when the away allocation is close to full. Away fans should head for the Vicarage Road Stand entrances and follow club or police directions, particularly when arriving from Watford town centre or the railway/tube routes.

Getting There

By Road

From the North

Use the M1 southbound and leave for Watford, then follow signs for the town centre and Vicarage Road. The stadium is central and residential parking is restricted, so plan parking carefully.

From the South

Approach via the M25 or A41 towards Watford, then follow signs for the town centre and hospital/Vicarage Road area. Local roads are tight and busy near kick-off.

From the East

Use the M25 clockwise towards Watford or local A-road routes, then follow town-centre signs. Consider town-centre car parks rather than trying to park beside the ground.

From the West

Use the M25 anticlockwise, M40/A40 or A41 routes towards Watford. Follow signs for Vicarage Road and the town centre, allowing extra time for matchday restrictions.

By Train

Watford High Street Station

Watford High Street is one of the closest stations to Vicarage Road and is useful for London Overground services. It gives a shorter walk than Watford Junction for many supporters.

Watford Junction Station

Watford Junction is the main rail station for longer-distance and London services. It is further from the stadium than Watford High Street but has stronger connections.

Walking From Station

Watford High Street Station

From Watford High Street, Vicarage Road is usually around a 10 to 15 minute walk. Follow town-centre routes towards the hospital and stadium area.

Watford Junction Station

From Watford Junction, the walk to Vicarage Road is usually around 20 to 30 minutes. Head through the town centre towards the stadium, or use a taxi/bus if time is tight.

By Air

Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport is usually the best airport for Watford and Vicarage Road. Travel by coach, taxi, or rail/Underground connections towards Watford Junction or Watford High Street. From Watford High Street, the ground is usually around 10 to 15 minutes on foot.

Luton Airport

Luton Airport is also practical for Watford, especially for budget flights. Travel by bus or rail via Luton Airport Parkway and London/Bedfordshire connections, then onward to Watford. Check train routes carefully because the journey may involve changes.

Matchday Advice

Vicarage Road is best approached by public transport or town-centre parking rather than by trying to drive to the ground itself. Watford's away guide information states that there is no parking available for fans at the ground and that street parking is restricted for local residents with matchday permits. Watford General Hospital also monitors hospital car parks to prevent supporter parking.

Watford town centre car parks are usually the practical option for drivers, with Church Car Park often cited as one of the easiest for access to Vicarage Road. Watford High Street, Watford Junction and Watford tube station are all usable depending on route, though none are directly outside the stadium. Away supporters should allow time for the walk through town and hospital-area streets, and should head directly to the Vicarage Road Stand rather than the Rookery home end.

Tickets

Home tickets are sold through Watford's official ticketing channels, with prices, sales windows and eligibility depending on the fixture. For a neutral, the Graham Taylor Stand or Sir Elton John Stand usually gives the best side-on view. The Rookery is the main home atmosphere end and is better suited to Watford supporters wanting a louder matchday rather than a quieter neutral experience.

Away supporters should buy through their own club once Watford release the allocation. Visiting fans are normally issued tickets for the Vicarage Road Stand. Collections, duplicates and matchday sales should be checked with the travelling club before setting off, as arrangements can vary by fixture. Away disabled supporters should arrange tickets and access requirements in advance through their club and Watford's disabled supporter channels where needed.

Stadium Rules

Vicarage Road operates standard football ground regulations, including ticket checks, searches where required, supporter segregation and bans on pyrotechnics, pitch incursions, throwing objects and discriminatory behaviour. Supporters should use the correct entrance for their ticket and should not attempt to move between home and away sections.

Because the ground is next to residential streets and Watford General Hospital, parking behaviour is particularly important. Supporters should not attempt to use hospital car parks and should respect local matchday permit restrictions. Watford publish visiting supporter information covering tickets, transport and parking, and supporters should check the latest fixture guide for bag rules, flags, banners, payment methods and prohibited items.

Accessibility

Watford publish disabled supporter information and a detailed access guide for Vicarage Road. The club provides information on accessible seating, entrances, toilet facilities, parking, transport and stadium maps, with disabled supporter ticket queries handled through a dedicated disabled-supporter email route. Watford also offer an accessibility tour online showing accessible seating provision, entrances and toilet facilities.

Away disabled supporter provision is located with or connected to the visiting arrangements, with accessible facilities improved in recent years. Supporters requiring wheelchair spaces, ambulant disabled seating, personal assistant tickets, accessible parking or other assistance should arrange this before travelling through their own club and Watford's accessibility team. Because Vicarage Road is compact and parking is very limited, advance planning is essential.

Stadium Tours

Watford do offer stadium tours of Vicarage Road, but these appear to be date-led and special-event based rather than a continuous daily attraction. The club advertised Legend Stadium Tours at The Vic in 2026, with limited-capacity guided tours on specific times and dates. Those tours were capped at 30 places each and sold through the club.

Supporters wanting a stadium tour should check Watford's official website and ticketing pages for current availability. The route and access can vary depending on match preparation and stadium operations, so a tour should not be assumed unless it is actively listed by the club.
