Bristol City are based at Ashton Gate and are one of the main football clubs in the West Country. The Robins have spent much of the modern era in the Championship, backed by strong local support and a clear Bristol identity. Their rivalry with Bristol Rovers remains central locally, while Ashton Gate has developed into a modern multi-use stadium.
Ashton Gate is a modernised traditional football ground in south Bristol, with its old four-stand layout transformed by major redevelopment. The key stands are the Dolman Stand along one side, the large double-tiered Lansdown Stand opposite, the South Stand behind one goal and the Atyeo Stand behind the other.
The Lansdown and South Stand are linked into a modern concourse arrangement and give Ashton Gate a much newer feel than many older city grounds, while the Dolman remains a recognisable long side stand. The stadium is also a multi-use Bristol Sport venue, but on football days it still feels like a tight, urban club ground rather than a neutral arena.
The redevelopment has made Ashton Gate one of the smarter grounds in the division, but its setting among residential streets and the older parts of south Bristol means it still has a proper city football feel.
Away supporters are normally housed in the Atyeo Stand, behind one of the goals at the Ashton Road end of the stadium. Recent away guides for visiting clubs state that away fans should enter via the Ashton Road side, with turnstile access for the Atyeo Stand.
The Atyeo is now generally used for visiting supporters rather than being split in the way it has been in some earlier eras, although allocation size can still depend on the fixture, safety requirements and demand. The stand is close to the pitch and has clear views.
Supporters should follow the dedicated away route because Ashton Gate sits among residential streets and the approaches can become congested close to kick-off. The Ashton Road side is the key landmark for away fans.
Use the M5 southbound and leave around Junction 18/19 depending on traffic, then follow signs for Bristol, the A4/Portway and Ashton Gate. The final approach uses Brunel Way/Winterstoke Road routes. Pre-booked parking is strongly advised.
Use the M5 northbound towards Bristol, leaving for routes towards the A370, Bedminster or Ashton Gate depending on your parking location. Roads around Ashton Road, Winterstoke Road and residential streets become very busy on matchdays.
Use the M4 westbound, then either the M32 into Bristol or M49/M5 depending on your parking plan. Follow signs for south Bristol and Ashton Gate. City-centre traffic can add time, especially for evening games.
Approach via the M4/M5 interchange or the A4 Portway from the Avonmouth side. Follow routes towards Brunel Way and Ashton Gate. Avoid turning up without a parking plan because local streets are restricted and fill quickly.
Bedminster is one of the most practical rail stations for Ashton Gate and is listed by the stadium as the closest station with step-free access. It is still a reasonable walk, so allow time.
Parson Street is also close to Ashton Gate and can be useful on local services. It is a practical option if your route stops there, though service frequency may be more limited than Temple Meads.
Bristol Temple Meads is the main rail station for long-distance supporters. It is not especially close to Ashton Gate, but matchday shuttle/bus options and taxis make it useful for away fans.
From Bedminster, the walk to Ashton Gate is usually around 25 to 30 minutes. Head through south Bristol towards North Street, Ashton Road and the stadium area.
From Parson Street, the walk to Ashton Gate is usually around 20 to 30 minutes depending on route. Follow signs or navigation towards Winterstoke Road and Ashton Gate.
Walking from Temple Meads to Ashton Gate is long, usually around 45 to 55 minutes. Most supporters should use a bus, shuttle, taxi or city-centre connection instead.
Bristol Airport is the best airport for Ashton Gate. Use the Airport Flyer or a taxi into Bristol, with Bristol Temple Meads and the city centre providing onward bus, taxi and matchday transport options. Ashton Gate is south-west of the centre, so allow time for traffic around Bedminster and Winterstoke Road.
Cardiff Airport can be an alternative for Bristol City if flights suit, but it involves a longer cross-Severn journey. Travel into Cardiff, then take rail to Bristol Temple Meads or use road transport via the M4/M48/M5. Bristol Airport is normally much more practical.

Ashton Gate is best approached with a plan, particularly if driving. The ground sits in a residential part of BS3 and matchday parking immediately around the stadium is limited, with residents' restrictions and heavy traffic common.
Rail travellers normally use Bristol Temple Meads or Parson Street with onward walking, bus or taxi options depending on time and weather. Away fans should head for the Atyeo and Ashton Road side of the stadium and arrive early enough for turnstile queues and steward checks.
The redeveloped concourses are generally good, but the area around Ashton Road and Winterstoke Road can be busy after full time, so expect a slower getaway than at an out-of-town stadium.
Home tickets are sold through Bristol City's official ticketing channels, with availability and pricing varying by fixture, membership status and stand. For a neutral, the Lansdown Stand gives the most modern and comfortable side-on view, while the Dolman Stand also offers a strong traditional view along the pitch.
Home atmosphere is usually strongest around the South Stand end and adjoining areas, so that is the better choice for supporters wanting more noise rather than a quieter neutral experience.
Away fans should buy through their own club once the allocation is released. The away allocation is normally in the Atyeo Stand, and any collection or duplicate ticket arrangements should be checked through the travelling club before setting off.
Ashton Gate operates standard stadium ground regulations for football fixtures, including ticket checks, searches where required, restrictions on bags and prohibited items, and bans on pyrotechnics, pitch incursions and discriminatory behaviour.
Supporters should use the correct stand entrance and should not attempt to move between home and away areas. Because Ashton Gate is also used for rugby and major events, some operational details can vary by event, so supporters should check the latest Bristol City or Ashton Gate matchday information before travelling.
Alcohol, flags, banners, musical instruments and larger bags may be subject to match-specific approval.
Bristol City provide accessible and wheelchair user tickets for fixtures at Ashton Gate. The club publishes accessibility information, including wheelchair and ambulant disabled supporter arrangements.
Away disabled supporters are housed in the Atyeo Stand with the away support, and accessible toilets are available in that stand as well as elsewhere around the stadium. Supporters needing wheelchair bays, easy-access seating, personal assistant tickets, accessible parking advice or other matchday assistance should contact Bristol City or their own club before purchasing.
Because away allocations and accessible spaces are limited and fixture-specific, access arrangements should be confirmed before travelling.
Bristol City and Ashton Gate do offer official stadium tours. The club announced official Ashton Gate stadium tours giving fans the chance to go behind the scenes at the venue.
The exact route can vary but is typically expected to include areas not normally open on matchdays, such as tunnel, dressing room or pitchside areas when stadium operations allow. Tours are not necessarily available every day, so supporters should check the official Bristol City or Ashton Gate tours information for current dates, prices, age rules and accessibility before making a special trip.
