Stadium Overview

Turf Moor is one of the oldest and most traditional league grounds in England, and it still feels very much like a proper town football stadium rather than a modern bowl. The ground is made up of four separate stands: the James Hargreaves Stand along one side, the Bob Lord Stand opposite, the Jimmy McIlroy Stand behind one goal and the David Fishwick Stand, also widely known as the Cricket Field Stand, behind the other.

The Bob Lord Stand is the older, lower side of the ground and gives Turf Moor much of its traditional character, while the James Hargreaves and Jimmy McIlroy Stands are larger and more modern. The ground is compact, enclosed and close to the pitch, with Burnley's home atmosphere usually strongest around the Jimmy McIlroy end and the louder sections adjoining it. Recent digital upgrades have added more modern presentation around the stadium, but the matchday feel remains unmistakably old-school Burnley.

Away End

Away supporters are normally housed in the David Fishwick Stand, better known to many fans as the Cricket Field Stand, behind one of the goals. This is the end nearest Burnley Cricket Club and the away allocation is usually on one side of that stand, though the size of the allocation can change depending on fixture demand, policing and segregation requirements. For cup ties or games with larger away allocations, the visiting section can be adjusted within that stand.

The away approach is generally from the Harry Potts Way / Belvedere Road side of the ground, with visiting coaches and supporters directed towards the Cricket Field Stand area. On higher-risk fixtures, access routes and coach parking can be tightly managed, so away fans should follow the match-specific information issued by Burnley and their own club rather than relying on old routines.

Getting There

By Road

From the North

Use the M6 southbound, then M65 eastbound towards Burnley. Leave the M65 for Burnley town centre and follow signs for Turf Moor. The ground is close to the centre, so matchday streets are tight and busy.

From the South

Use the M6 northbound and join the M65 eastbound, or approach via Manchester and the M66/A56. Follow signs into Burnley and Turf Moor. Allow extra time around town-centre roads and residential parking zones.

From the East

Approach via the A646, A671 or A56 routes into Burnley depending on starting point. Follow signs for Burnley town centre and Turf Moor. These cross-Pennine roads can be slow, especially in poor weather.

From the West

Use the M65 eastbound from Preston/Blackburn towards Burnley. Leave for the town centre and follow signs for Turf Moor. Parking close to the ground is limited, so use recognised car parks where possible.

By Train

Burnley Manchester Road Station

Burnley Manchester Road is usually the best station for Turf Moor for longer-distance services, including connections from Manchester, Preston and East Lancashire. The ground is walkable from the station.

Burnley Central Station

Burnley Central is also walkable and can be useful for local services. Check your route carefully because not all services use the same Burnley station.

Walking From Station

Burnley Manchester Road Station

From Burnley Manchester Road, Turf Moor is usually around a 15 to 20 minute walk. Head down towards the town centre and follow signs or crowds towards Harry Potts Way.

Burnley Central Station

From Burnley Central, the walk to Turf Moor is usually around 15 to 20 minutes. Follow town-centre routes towards Yorkshire Street and the stadium.

By Air

Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is usually the best airport for Turf Moor because of flight choice and rail links into Manchester. From there, travel by train towards Burnley Manchester Road, usually via Manchester Victoria or other regional connections. From Burnley Manchester Road, Turf Moor is around a 15 to 20 minute walk.

Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport can work for Burnley, particularly from some domestic and European routes, but onward public transport is less straightforward. Expect a bus or taxi to Leeds or Bradford, then rail/bus connections across East Lancashire. Manchester Airport is usually easier.

Matchday Advice

Turf Moor is an excellent traditional away day but it sits in a busy residential area, so do not expect easy street parking right by the turnstiles. The club advises supporters to be considerate when parking on residential roads around the stadium, and traffic around Harry Potts Way, Yorkshire Street and the town-centre approaches can become slow close to kick-off and again after full time.

Burnley Manchester Road and Burnley Central are both usable rail options, with Manchester Road generally the more useful for many visitors. If travelling in colours, head directly towards the away end rather than drifting towards home pubs and home turnstile areas. The Cricket Field Stand is an older stand compared with many modern away ends, so facilities are functional rather than luxury. Arriving early is sensible, especially for Lancashire derbies and fixtures where extra police or route-management arrangements are likely.

Tickets

Home tickets are sold through Burnley's official ticketing channels, with online sales, membership or sales-window restrictions depending on the fixture. The James Hargreaves Stand is usually the strongest choice for a neutral wanting a side-on view with a modern stand feel, while the Bob Lord Stand gives a more traditional low-roofed view. Supporters wanting the strongest home atmosphere are more likely to look towards the Jimmy McIlroy end and adjoining sections.

Away fans should purchase tickets through their own club once the allocation has been released. Visiting tickets will normally be for the David Fishwick / Cricket Field Stand. Away collections, duplicate tickets and matchday sales are fixture-dependent and should always be checked with the visiting club before travelling, especially because Burnley's bigger or higher-risk fixtures can have tighter ticketing and access arrangements.

Stadium Rules

Turf Moor operates standard football ground regulations, including ticket checks, supporter searches where required, segregation controls and bans on pyrotechnics, pitch incursions and discriminatory behaviour. Burnley match information has reminded supporters that the stadium operates a no re-entry policy, so anyone leaving during the match should not expect to be allowed back in.

Smoking and e-cigarettes are not permitted across the stadium campus. Supporters should use the correct turnstiles for their ticket and follow steward or police instructions, particularly around the Cricket Field Stand and coach parking areas. For local derbies and high-profile fixtures, Burnley may publish additional access arrangements, and those should be treated as the most accurate matchday instructions.

Accessibility

Burnley publish disabled supporter information and accessibility guidance for Turf Moor. Accessible seating, wheelchair spaces and personal assistant arrangements are available, but supporters should arrange these in advance through the club or, for away supporters, through their own club's ticketing process. Burnley also reference a detailed pan-disability access guide for Turf Moor, and accessible stadium-tour arrangements can be requested separately.

Because Turf Moor is an older ground with different stand ages and layouts, the best entrance and seating position depends heavily on the ticket type and access requirement. Supporters needing step-free access, wheelchair bays, accessible parking, assistance dogs, easy-access seating or help with temporary mobility issues should contact the club before matchday rather than waiting until arrival.

Stadium Tours

Burnley do offer official Turf Moor stadium tours. The club advertises behind-the-scenes tours lasting approximately 90 minutes, giving supporters access to parts of the stadium that are not normally open on matchdays. The exact route can vary depending on football operations, but tours are promoted as a proper look inside Turf Moor rather than simply a walk around the concourse.

Burnley have also confirmed that tailored stadium tours can be arranged for visitors with accessibility requirements. Tour dates are not something to assume every day, so anyone making a special journey should book through Burnley's official stadium-tour page and check the latest times, prices and access information.
