Stadium Overview

Hillsborough is one of the great traditional football grounds in England. Opened in 1899 and home to Sheffield Wednesday ever since, it sits in the Owlerton area of Sheffield between residential streets, Hillsborough Park, Penistone Road and the River Don. It is a large, historic stadium rather than a modern bowl, and every stand has its own identity.

The South Stand is the main stand and includes the principal hospitality, directors, media and club facilities. Opposite is the North Stand, a famous cantilever structure and one of the most recognisable parts of the ground. Behind one goal is the Spion Kop, a huge home end and usually the main source of Wednesday noise. Behind the other goal is the West Stand on the Leppings Lane side, which is where visiting supporters are normally housed.

Hillsborough is impressive because of its size, history and old-school layout, but it is not a simple modern stadium. Access routes, concourses, stand facilities and views vary depending on where you sit. It is a ground with huge character, strong atmosphere for bigger matches, and a history that should always be treated with respect by home and visiting supporters.

Away End

Away supporters at Hillsborough are normally housed in the West Stand on the Leppings Lane side of the stadium. Sheffield Wednesday's own first-time visitor information describes this as the visiting-supporter stand, with a maximum allocation of around 4,000. For many away fans, this is one of the most recognisable away ends in the country.

Entry is via the Leppings Lane side, and visiting supporters should follow the exact turnstile, collection and coach instructions issued for their fixture. The West Stand is an older stand and the experience can vary depending on whether supporters are in the upper or lower tier, the size of the allocation, and the segregation plan for the match.

Because of Hillsborough's history and the layout around Leppings Lane, supporters should be patient and respectful when arriving and leaving. Follow steward and police directions, arrive early for larger followings, and do not rely on old away-day information if Sheffield Wednesday or the visiting club have issued specific match guidance.

Matchday Advice

Hillsborough is around three miles from Sheffield city centre and railway station, so most train travellers will need a tram, bus, taxi or a long walk. The Supertram towards Hillsborough is a useful option for many supporters, with stops in the wider Hillsborough area, though services can be very busy before and after matches.

Driving to Hillsborough requires planning. The stadium is surrounded by residential streets, busy roads and parking restrictions. Penistone Road is the main route past the ground, and traffic can be heavy close to kick-off and after full-time. Use official or recommended parking where possible and do not assume there will be street parking near Leppings Lane.

For neutrals, the South Stand gives the best main-stand experience, the North Stand gives a strong side-on view where available, and the Kop is the home atmosphere end. Hillsborough is an excellent ground for traditional football character, but access, queues and facilities vary more than at a modern stadium.

Tickets

Sheffield Wednesday sell home tickets through the club's official ticketing channels, with priority points, membership windows or previous purchase history sometimes relevant for higher-demand matches. The Kop is the main home atmosphere area, while the South Stand gives the best traditional main-stand experience. Side-on seats are usually preferable for neutrals who want the clearest tactical view.

Away tickets are normally sold through the visiting club for the West Stand on Leppings Lane. The maximum allocation can be large by League One standards, but the final number depends on segregation, fixture risk and demand. Some matches may be all-ticket with no walk-up sales.

Away supporters should pay close attention to collection instructions, especially if collections are from the Leppings Lane ticket booth or a specific away point. Do not assume staff can resolve missing tickets on the day if the visiting club has issued a deadline for ticket problems.

Stadium Rules

Hillsborough operates standard EFL ground regulations, with stewarding, ticket checks and search procedures in place. Pyrotechnics, smoke bombs, offensive weapons, alcohol brought into the stadium, discriminatory abuse, missile throwing and entering the playing area are prohibited.

Supporters should use the entrance, stand, block and seat shown on their ticket. Away fans should use the Leppings Lane / West Stand arrangements and should not attempt to enter home areas. Hillsborough is an older and more complex stadium than many grounds, so steward instructions around stairways, concourses, gangways and exits should be followed carefully.

The history of Hillsborough means all supporters should behave respectfully around the stadium and its surrounding areas. Do not block exits, gangways or stairways, and allow extra time for controlled movement before and after the match.

Accessibility

Sheffield Wednesday publish accessibility information for Hillsborough, including specific guidance for away supporters. Disabled supporters should arrange wheelchair spaces, ambulant disabled seating, personal assistant tickets and any specific assistance in advance through the appropriate ticket office.

Away disabled supporters should check the West Stand / Leppings Lane access arrangements carefully, as Hillsborough is an older stadium and routes can differ from those used by general away supporters. Accessible parking is limited, and the stadium is surrounded by residential streets with parking restrictions, so parking or drop-off should be arranged early.

Because Hillsborough has older stands, varied concourse layouts and busy approaches, disabled supporters should allow extra time for arrival and departure. Anyone needing specific help should contact Sheffield Wednesday or their own club before travelling rather than relying on matchday stewards to improvise arrangements.

Stadium Tours

Sheffield Wednesday offer official stadium tours of Hillsborough. The club advertises tours through its hospitality and stadium tour pages, with behind-the-scenes access including areas such as the dressing rooms, tunnel and dugouts, subject to the route available on the day.

Tours usually run on selected dates and must be booked in advance. Because Hillsborough is a historic and operational football stadium, availability can depend on fixtures, stadium work and events. Supporters should check Sheffield Wednesday's official booking information for current dates, prices and access details.
