Stadium Overview

St James Park is one of the most distinctive grounds in League Two, partly because of its location and partly because of the way it has developed over time. It sits very close to Exeter city centre and is unusually well connected by rail, with St James Park station directly beside the ground.

The stadium has a traditional, uneven character rather than a modern bowl design. The main seated stand runs along one side, while the Big Bank behind one goal is one of the largest standing terraces still used in the EFL and is the main home atmosphere area. The away end is at the St James Road end, with visiting supporters usually given terracing and, where required, some seated provision.

St James Park feels tight, urban and characterful. The ground is close to the pitch, the Big Bank can generate strong noise, and the surrounding streets make it feel like a proper city-centre football ground. Facilities are more mixed than at newer stadiums, but the setting and atmosphere make it one of the more memorable away days in the division.

Away End

Away supporters are normally housed in the Marsh Kia St James Road Stand, a covered standing terrace behind one goal. Exeter’s away supporter information confirms that tickets for visiting fans are normally sold through the away club, with any matchday sales from the away ticket booth next to the away turnstiles on St James Road.

For clubs with a larger following, or where seating is required, Exeter can also provide away seating in part of the main stand depending on allocation and demand. Supporters should check their own club’s ticket details carefully because standing and seating are separate options and prices can differ.

The away end is close to the pitch and can produce a good atmosphere. The approach is through the St James Road side of the ground, which is in a tight residential area, so arriving early helps with queues and finding the correct entrance. Supporters who need seating, wheelchair access or any specific arrangements should organise this before travelling.

Matchday Advice

St James Park is best approached by public transport where possible. St James Park railway station is right beside the ground, while Exeter Central is also walkable and gives a good option for supporters coming into the city. Driving into the area can be slower, and parking close to the stadium is limited because the ground is surrounded by residential streets.

The ground is close enough to the city centre for supporters to use Exeter’s pubs, cafés and food options before walking up to the stadium. Away supporters should check match-specific advice, as pub access and police guidance can vary depending on the fixture.

For neutral supporters, side-on seating gives the most comfortable view. The Big Bank is the main home atmosphere area and is a standing terrace, while away supporters are normally in the St James Road away terrace. If you prefer a seat, or if bad weather is forecast, choose your ticket carefully because the terrace and seated areas offer different experiences.

Tickets

Exeter City tickets are sold through the club’s official ticketing channels, with online purchase recommended. Prices can vary between standing and seating, and Exeter’s away guide notes that matchday prices may be higher than advance prices where matchday sales are available.

Away tickets are normally sold through the visiting club. If tickets are available on the day, Exeter state that they are sold from the away ticket booth next to the away turnstiles on St James Road. Visiting supporters should still check their own club’s information before travelling, especially if the game is all-ticket or if the away allocation is close to selling out.

For home neutrals, the main seated areas are the safest choice for comfort and view. Supporters wanting the strongest home atmosphere should look towards the Big Bank, while families or those wanting an easier first visit may prefer seated areas away from the livelier terrace.

Stadium Rules

Standard EFL ground regulations apply at St James Park. Supporters should expect searches and normal restrictions on alcohol, pyrotechnics, offensive behaviour, discriminatory language and entering the field of play.

Because St James Park is surrounded by residential streets, supporters should be considerate when arriving and leaving. Away fans should use the St James Road entrances and follow steward directions, especially where segregation is in place.

Supporters should also make sure they have the correct ticket type. Standing terrace tickets and seated tickets are not interchangeable, and stewards may direct supporters to the area shown on their ticket.

Accessibility

Exeter City provide accessible ticket information and advise supporters requiring wheelchair areas or other disability-related arrangements to buy in advance. Tickets can be bought over the phone or through the club’s online ticketing site, and supporters needing a personal assistant should arrange this before matchday.

The ground’s traditional layout means access arrangements can vary by stand. Wheelchair users, ambulant disabled supporters and anyone requiring step-free access should confirm their entrance, viewing area, companion ticket and toilet facilities ahead of travelling.

St James Park is very convenient by rail because of the station beside the ground, but the surrounding streets can be narrow and busy on matchdays. Supporters with mobility needs should plan arrival time carefully and contact the club in advance for the most suitable route.

Stadium Tours

Exeter City do offer stadium tours at St James Park. The club advertises free stadium tours on matchday mornings, usually starting at 11am from the Fan Zone outside the club shop, giving supporters the chance to go behind the scenes as the ground prepares for a match.

Availability can depend on fixture scheduling and club arrangements, so supporters should check Exeter City’s current stadium tour information before travelling. This is a stronger tour offering than many League Two grounds, where regular public tours are often unavailable.
