Stadium Overview

St Mary's Stadium is a modern, enclosed bowl-style stadium close to Southampton city centre and the River Itchen. It opened in 2001 when Southampton left The Dell, and it has a very different feel from the tight, awkward old ground it replaced. The stadium is broadly symmetrical, with four connected stands: the Itchen Stand, Kingsland Stand, Chapel Stand and Northam Stand.

The Itchen Stand is the main stand, housing hospitality, media areas and many of the club's central facilities. The Kingsland Stand runs opposite and offers a strong side-on view. The Chapel Stand is generally the calmer end of the ground, while the Northam Stand has traditionally been the livelier home atmosphere area and sits closest to the away section. Because of the enclosed design, noise can carry well when the crowd is up, though the matchday feel is more modern and spacious than old-school.

Away End

Away supporters are normally housed in the Northam Stand corner, between the Northam Stand and the Itchen Stand. The allocation can vary by fixture, but visiting fans are usually placed in that corner section rather than behind a whole goal. This puts away supporters close to the traditional louder home area, which can help create a strong atmosphere, especially for bigger fixtures.

Away supporters should follow the visiting supporter route and match-specific instructions issued by Southampton and their own club. Official coach and minibus parking for away supporters is normally on Melbourne Street, and accessible away parking spaces are positioned close to the away ticket office and away turnstiles. Because road closures can be put in place around the stadium, away fans using accessible parking are advised by the club to arrive well before kick-off.

Getting There

By Road

From the North

Use the M3 southbound towards Southampton, then follow signs for the city centre and St Mary's Stadium. The ground is also accessible from the M27. Visiting supporters should allow time for city-centre traffic and stadium-area road closures.

From the South

From Southampton docks, ferry terminal or city-centre areas, follow signs for Northam and St Mary's. Stadium access is commonly via Britannia Road, Marine Parade or Northam Road routes.

From the East

Use the M27 westbound towards Southampton, then follow signs for the city centre and St Mary's Stadium. Leave extra time around Northam and the Itchen Bridge approaches.

From the West

Use the M27 eastbound towards Southampton and follow signs for the city centre/St Mary's. Parking close to the stadium is limited, so city-centre or pre-booked options are usually better.

By Train

Southampton Central Station

Southampton Central is the best station for St Mary's Stadium. It has the strongest rail connections and the stadium is around a 20 minute walk away, with matchday shuttle buses often operating.

Walking From Station

Southampton Central Station

From Southampton Central, St Mary's is usually around a 20 to 25 minute walk. Head towards the city centre and Northam, then follow signs for Britannia Road or Marine Parade approaches.

By Air

Southampton Airport

Southampton Airport is the best airport for St Mary's Stadium. Use Southampton Airport Parkway station for trains to Southampton Central, then walk, use the matchday shuttle, bus or taxi to the stadium. Southampton's official guidance notes the stadium is accessible from the airport and train station.

Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport is a practical alternative with rail connections to the south coast. Travel by train towards Southampton Central, changing if required. From Southampton Central, St Mary's is around a 20 to 25 minute walk or short shuttle/taxi ride.

Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport is useful for long-haul flights but usually needs a coach, road transfer or rail journey via London/Reading towards Southampton. Build in extra time, especially for evening fixtures.

Matchday Advice

St Mary's is one of the better grounds for arriving by train, with Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway both usable depending on route, though Southampton Central is the main city station. The walk from the city centre or station is manageable for many supporters, but allow time because the stadium sits on the eastern side of the city centre and the approach becomes busy close to kick-off.

Driving right up to the stadium is not recommended unless using official coach, minibus or pre-arranged accessible parking. Southampton publish matchday travel information and road closures can affect the stadium area, especially around the final hour before kick-off. Away fans should head for the Northam/Itchen corner approach and avoid drifting into the main home Northam areas. The stadium is modern and the concourses are generally good, but late arrival can still mean queues at ticket checks and searches.

Tickets

Home tickets are sold through Southampton's official ticketing channels, with prices, sales windows and eligibility depending on the fixture. For a neutral, the Itchen Stand or Kingsland Stand usually gives the best overall side-on view. The Chapel Stand is generally a calmer option, while the Northam Stand is better suited to Saints supporters wanting atmosphere rather than a quieter watch.

Away supporters should buy through their own club once Southampton release the allocation. Visiting tickets are normally for the Northam corner section, close to the Itchen Stand side. Collections, duplicate tickets and matchday sales should be checked with the travelling club before setting off, as arrangements vary by fixture. Away disabled supporters should arrange tickets and any accessible parking through their own club in advance.

Stadium Rules

St Mary's operates standard football ground regulations, including ticket checks, searches where required, supporter segregation and bans on pyrotechnics, pitch incursions, throwing objects and discriminatory behaviour. Supporters should use the correct entrance for their ticket and should not attempt to move between home and away areas.

Because road closures and crowd-management plans can operate around the stadium, supporters should follow steward and police instructions before and after the match. Southampton may also issue fixture-specific guidance on bags, flags, banners, ticket collections and payment arrangements. Away fans using coaches, minibuses or accessible parking should follow the club's latest travel instructions, as arrival routes and parking access can be controlled on matchdays.

Accessibility

Southampton publish dedicated accessibility information for St Mary's, including specific guidance for away disabled supporters. Away supporters requiring blue badge parking are told to contact their own club to purchase, with four allocated onsite accessible parking spaces for away supporters. These spaces are located next to the away ticket office and away turnstiles/accessibile entrance, and the club advises arrival no later than one hour and 30 minutes before kick-off because of road closures.

St Mary's also has wider accessible provision, including the Bargate Sensory Room for supporters who may benefit from a calmer matchday environment. Wheelchair spaces, easy-access seating, personal assistant tickets, accessible parking and sensory needs should all be arranged in advance rather than left until matchday.

Stadium Tours

Southampton do offer official St Mary's Stadium tours. The club advertises tours on selected non-matchday weekends and selected school-holiday dates, with adult and under-18 pricing listed on the official events pages. Tours are promoted as a behind-the-scenes look at St Mary's, with areas such as the press conference room, tunnel, dressing-room areas and trophy displays included where stadium operations allow.

Tours are not available every day, so supporters should check Southampton's official stadium tour listings for current dates, prices, availability and accessibility before making a special journey.
